Dear Diana,

My son was deployed multiple times. He has not been the same since he has been home.  His girlfriend of four years spoke to me privately about his behavior.  He screams at her.  I did not raise my son to speak to a woman like that.  I’m worried something is wrong.  Should I talk to him?  I know many guys come home with PTSD.  Could he have it?

Mary

Dear Mary,

Any mother would be concerned.  Unfortunately, PTSD is a very real possibility for your son.  In order to properly diagnosis him he would have to see a professional mental health counselor or psychologist.  Now the issue is how to get him to see a professional.  My suggestion is that you privately sit him down and ask him how things have been going.  Do not mention that his girlfriend told you anything as it may cause her more strife.  It maybe a good idea to o gently advise him to talk to someone in order for him to vent.  The letters PTSD do not need to be said.  Encourage him that letting out what he has been through and currently dealing with is healthy.  This will not be easy but as his mother you have the right to intervene when it comes to the well being of your son.

Please let me know what happens.  This is your first step.

Best,
Diana
