Hi Diana,

I’m dating a white girl.   I’m black.  She wants to meet my parents but honestly my mom would flip if she knew I was seeing a white girl.  I think my girlfriend could be the one.  I don’t know what to do.

Hi,

Sadly, we still live in a world where there are racial and cultural biases.  Your mother is holding on to stereotypes rather than looking at people for who they are rather than their exterior.  Although our parents are authority figures we do not always have to agree with their perspectives or lifestyle choices.  You are a grown man.  You have the right to love whomever you want.  Your mother may not like it but she has to respect your decision.  If she doesn’t she will be the one missing out.  Be honest with your mom.  Tell her that you met a great girl and although she doesn’t fit your mom’s ideal mate for you, she suits you just fine.

These are the moments that test who we are and want we stand for.

You can handle this.

Best,
Diana
