Dear Diana,

I am a 27-year old staff sgt who has been in the army 6 years now. Currently on my 3rd deployment, 2nd one to Afghanistan. The dating scene has been difficult for me during my career since I have been constantly deployed almost every other year. Now with the drawdown, I am looking at getting back into the dating scene. Although I have had one serious relationship during my career, it ended bad because of my work. All my buddies’ wives tell me that I am a catch and any gal would be lucky to have me, but seems like everytime I try to pursue something, it never works out. I have been wounded but the scars are small. I would rather attack an enemy on a mountain than attempt a conversation with a lady. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi there,

I give you a lot of credit to put yourself out there.  It’s not easy for many of us to admit our fears.  Remember, people are people which means do not make it harder than it is.  If someone catches your eye go say hello.  What’s the worst that can happen?  She doesn’t respond favorably and you move on.  Most women find it flattering when a man approaches them in a respectful manner.   It only takes one lady to change your life.  Do not create un-necessary roadblocks.  I know you got this!

Best,
Diana
